- 12/4/10 -- for those interested, read my afterthought(s)
- 3/12/09 -- So far 6 students have graded, of which 4 have written
an essay. The essays are quite interesting, and although I can understand
that many students hesitate to write essay, I cannot but strongly encourage
all students to write one. Writing is a skill that will become more
important the further you pursue your study or work in an academic setting.
As concerns the assignments, I have been (very) lenient in accepting
deviations from the prescribed format(s).
However, essential and as such non-negotiable is the availability
of an online portfolio. I cannot repeat too much that all students
Creative Technology must have an up-to-date personal online portfolio.
If nothing else, the NM1 course should provide you with the (technical)
means to create your online presence.
For those who have not finished their work, please do so ASAP.
For those who have finished their work and received a grade,
do not hesitate to update your portfolio, and if you have not done
so write an essay, indeed for free!
- 31/10/09 -- some minor update in status files, a.o. Irene, Reinout, Sarah, Joost, Pieter, Thomas, Martina, ..., and Bram, ...
- 27/10/09 -- all in all the worst page(s) election(s) were a great success, and even got into the .CREATE blog(s), not only because of the great variety
of annoying pages and what may be called an ingenious display of bad taste,
but in a more direct sense due to the fact that almost everybody participated, showing a suitable to high level of technical skills,
and that is what the NM1 course is all about, after all.
Looking at these pages, I am confident that all students can
finalize their portfolios, and use web technology in future projects
to document ideas and plans, as well as for great visual effects
or other types of feedback in game play.
As an advice to the students, take the opportunity to work out ideas
for future projects, and explore the technologies that you may later need,
including sqlite database technology, web-based streaming video,
and why not 3D visualation libraries, such as papervision3D.
All these topics are suitable for short essays as well!
And, remember, if you do not write down your ideas, you
will likely forget them, and probably not be able to communicate these
ideas to others when needed and time is pressing.
For further exploration(s), read
interactive space(s) -- the CTSG: bridging the real and virtual.
- 16/10/09 -- I did a round over the Portfolio(s), which
mostly are still blogs, and for those that updated them, an interesting read, indeed.
As Herjan remarked, it is now time for technical work, not finally,
but simply time.
As concerns web technology, interesting site(s) were posted by Douwe and Arthur,
and (I almost forgot) Pieter,
as well as nice clip(s) by Reinout and John Doe (aka again Reinout),
and I have already seen some pretty bad, that is good, pages
for the worst page competition, that will take place monday 26/10/09.
Many of you, however, still seem not to be on track, and for those my advice is: get to work.
Do not hesitate to experiment, and use copy/paste and explore as a method.
It is not that I discredit books, but in some way you have to learn
to work in a context in which there are many things you do not know,
or want to know, much about.
As a technical tip, take in particular a look at the jquery and processing examples, since this
is the glue that can bind many things together, and although to some
these things may at first sight to be apparently useless,
in the end, that means in other courses you will need these
fragments and your skills to make something worthwhile,
such as a locative game as part of the CTSGs,
whether it is useful or not.
As for that, and indeed I was a little annoyed by the phrase,
do not expect to learn anything useful in my courses,
but take the opportunity to select a topic of your interest,
and develop your skills within that particular subdomain,
by exploration and adaptation to a suitable context.
Take a playful approach, but be productive!
Since we did not manage to create much online identity in CA1,
due to the SmartXP Exhibit, take the opportunity for the final assignment
to work on the group site, set up by Jan,
with in mind (y)our motto: together we create!
See you monday 919/10/09, and for the topics look
at the schedule(s).
And, be in time!
Also do not forget to look at your status in
participant(s).
There is one month more to go.
And, finally, if you have no portfolio online yet, or changed your
portfolio/url wrt to NM1, send me an email with the url, ASAP!
Make no mistake, no (NM1) portfolio, no (NM1) grading.
After all, the creative industry is a
portfolio industry!
- 12/10/09 -- CTSG (location) workshop 15/19:

for those ... (not knowing where to begin)
look at www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/resource-jquery.html
and read the introduction, and then take the listing(s), and experiment by modification, then read, verander, leer, en kijk verder
