- 2/7/2010 -- grading/feedback
with the course finished, all what's left is the grading.
The are no hard deadline, but I urge you to complete the course as soon as your are ready,
by sending me anemail with a request for grading.
Grading is done in the usual way, and based on not only your work but also:
- a description of your work for the course in your portfolio, with a clearly recognizable entry for this course
- an essay, where you elaborate on your work for the course, and treat one or more topics in some depth
In the essay, do not forget to indicate what you have learned.
In addition, you would do me a favor by giving feedback, using the online form at:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/feedback-nm2.html
- 5/6/2010 -- via email I wrote -- progress?
monday 14 june, I would like to finish NM2, with a final presentation of both the nano
and the telemedicine, if possible.
For the telemedicine project, I have the impression that most of the work is done, although
perhaps the motion capture Pieter did still has to be integrated.
For the nano project, I am not so sure, and I would like to have an update, and if possible,
prototype demonstration.
For the 14th of june, it would be nice to have the shareholders present, but this must be arranged
by the project members themselves. So see if your shareholders are willing to be present
at the morningsession in CT300.
On a personal level. first of all, Ineke and Douwe, where are you?
For Joost, good plan for NM2, finalize your proposal and go ahead.
Finally, with respect to CA3, when demonstrating the draw & walk example, and
the unity canvas (both waypoint and networked), the reactions are very, very positive.
So, we are on to something, and must continue to realize this. In the time left, we can still
do a lot. But first of all, afinal date for the samrt xp event must be planned.
see you monday, but very likely in a somewhat shattered fashion, that is indeterminate in time.
- 30/05/2010 21:04 -- 7/11 mood(s)
it is almost 21.00 hours.
we are getting close: 7/11
some still under construction,
keep constructing, and for the others: submit!
see you tomorrow
- 30/05/2010 10:24 -- 4/11 mood(s)
we must have at least 9/11,
so submit your mood(s) by url today,
and do not think that I do not consider a deadline a dead line!
PS build your material for the webplayer, I only accept non-urls by exception.
- 29/05/2010 22:57 -- 3/11 mood(s)
there are now 3/11 moods @ www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/mood-nm2-09.html
you can not stay behind!
- 29/05/2010 15:16 -- 1/11 mood(s)
so far 1/11 mood(s): www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/mood-nm2-09.html
get your ... moving!
- 24/5/10: via email I wrote -- moodboard(s)
coming monday, may 31, we will have a look at your moodboards.
These moodboard must be dynamic and interactive. Moreover, since the
general choice was for unity, they must be made with Unity. So if you did not get started,
start now. The topic of the moodboards are personal, but you may want to address themes related
to singularity, that is the smart XP and gogbot events.
Then think about what kind of drawing
space, and visual effects, might be realized with a unity canvas, as already explored by Jan K.:
createutwente.appspot.com/blog/unitycanvas_nutshell
The networked unity canvas will provide the basic architecture for the smart xp event
and gogbot application(s). Experiment, to find what you can do with it!
In the afternoon, the smart xp will not be available due to an event, see
sites.google.com/site/create09ca3
Besides, I will be busy with a staffmeeting, which is about portfolios.
Which reminds me, do not forget to update your portfolios.
- 5/5/10: via emaol I wrote -- prototype(s)
next monday, may 10, we will have a look at the prototypes, and discuss
what needs to be done, as stated in: www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/deliverable-nm2.html
If everything goes well, we may have done most of the work in may,
next monday, may 10, we will have a look at the prototypes, and discuss
what needs to be done, as stated in: www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/deliverable-nm2.html
If everything goes well, we may have done most of the work in may,
leaving june for (together we have) fun and play!
- 20/4/10: via email I wrote -- prototype(s)/deadline(s)
I think I also speak for Jurriaan, Tom and Bert-Jan, when I state that I was very satisfied
with the presentations, and that the (final) results look (very) promising. Good work!
And a pity that Ineke was not there. Nor Joost for that matter. But he will get a chance
in the election of the best mood/board space, as announced on
sites.google.com/site/create09nm2
which will take place 31 may. Be prepared, this is a deadline you cannot miss!
Now let's get on with the prototypes. I propose a first demonstration and discussion
for the 10th of may.
- 10/4/10: via email I wrote -- unity/tool(s)
dear all
as (repeatedly) announced, next monday 12 april, Mike Hergaarden
will present his work with Unity in the morning, and will look at your work and discuss
questions about Unity and game development with you in the afternoon.
Experiments, prototypes, or simply questions, anything goes.
The 19th we will have a formal presentation of your projects for NM2,
and in the afternoon an informal review of your ideas for Gogbot (CA3).
sites.google.com/site/creativetechnologyutwente
For presenting your work, you may look at the tool illustrated in
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/play-metaphor.html
a tool Andre has already explored, as an alternative to powerpoint (or s5).
It is may plan to (finally) arrange the grading for NM1 at the 26th.
For those that have not yet passed, as indicated in
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/class-nm1-09.html
put your portfolio online and finalize your essay.
If you cannot find the time, then we will make further arrangments the 26th.
See you monday.
- 26/3/10:
the groups (nano & telemedicine) seem well on there way,
with promising (first versions of) presentations of the plans
and ideas. Pieter and Siewart take a supporting role,
and Jan K. also contributes to the (self) teaching efforts.
Jan (the other) and Joost still must start, so it seems.
The 19th of april there will be formal presentations to the shareholders.
At this moment, the individual portfolios/blogs do not reflect the current
work, and although the promises are there, more effort should be
invested in updating the portfolios and documenting the ideas,
also in the shared common(s) on sites.google.com/site/create09nm2
Look at the your status files for more comments.
- 17/3/10: via email I wrote -- presentation(s)
dear all --
for next week, march 22, I would like you to prepare (at least part)
of a formal presentation of your project, using powerpoint s5 or another
suitable medium. Those not organised yet, jan, joost, please do so asap,
and contact the representative(s) for the assignment.
I aim for each group at a presentation of about 10 minutes, in preparation
for a formal presentation to he shareholders of which the date will be determined.
In the first half hour I will present the panorama system, and Dhavas will give
some further explanations about the ideas underlying panorama.
Please be in time!

dear all --
it is about 10.30, shanghai time, and I learned from the email of Pieter and Siewart
that you have holidays. So, do enjoy your holidays.
I am altogether very happy with the initiative(s) of Siewart and Pieter to start a 3d class,
as well as with the efforts of Ineke to create groups working on the requirements for the
nano project(s). Hopefully, the telemedicine groups also get started, ...
I am looking forward to see the results when I am back, monday march 8, 10,45 (!),
and see your working documents and unity/blender experiments, all presented by you, of course.
As for CA3, we will start march 8, with an introduction by/with Dhaval Vyas, and I am thinking
of some nice, and perhaps surprising challenges.
Next week, when you do your 2nd 3D class, I will be at the game confereence,
presenting the CTSG-related papers.
Enjoy your holiday(s) and see you in two weeks.
...
(from shanghai)
... as usual, after sending the email, I realized I forgot
something, but that basically amounts to
it's all in the game,
so I left it at that.
- 8/2/10: red vs blue, what does it mean?
4 against 7, on a first count. blue wins.
Apparently the memory of the students is almost as bad as mine.
Unfortunately, I could not immediately demonstrate the
marker(s), due to the disappearance
of the necessary jquery scripts from code.google.com
(now it works again, just drag your name to someplace on the field).
And you may consult the interactive space(s) paper for further explanation.
I am happy to observe that the project assignments are taken very seriously, both the nano and
telemedicine (that is virtual
scenarios) project(s).
And, I am looking forward to see the first results
in session 3, march 8 2010.
Make good use of the common(s) and CTSG site(s) to share
material and ideas!
- 9/1/10 --
first of, already way into 2010, a happy new year,
and after many nights with little sleep, I am happy to announce that
my baby is doing well, and that I am looking forward to the next step,
that is the second semestor of creative technology, in which I will teach the
NM2 and CA3 classes.
In preparation for that, and in reflection on the first semester, I think it is worthwhile
to (seriously) focus on (serious) games and scenario-driven design using (more or less serious)
games and interactive animations.
From previous discussions with some of the students, there seems to be consensus about
the use of the unity game engine and development environment.
For those who are not comfortable with learning from online resources, I wish to
recommend the purchase of a book: Goldstone W. (2009), /Unity Game Deevelopment Essentials/, Packt Publishing (www.packtpub.com/unity-game-development-essentials/book)
that may give you an easy introduction in the technology as well as the process of game development. Perhaps Gerrit (in CC) might be willing to buy some copies.
In the next semester all lectures will be on mondays more or less as announced in the
online schedules at: www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE
This period I want you to focus on projects that come from the EWI community, as
listed in www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/create-project.html
and both NM2 and CA3 lectures will pay (a lot of) attention to developing and realizing
(y)our ideas. Using these assignments, we will nevertheless strive to realize the CTSG(s).
Monday februari 1, 10.45 we will start with the first NM2 lecture.
For a preview, look at www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/session-nm2-1.html
Be in time!
