- 17/6/2011: serious conversations
Please read this mail carefully!
Since I will be leaving soon, it is important that we discuss/settle how to deal with
grading. As I indicated, already a number of times, I want to finalize grading both
the NM2 and CA3 course the 1th of july (1/7/2011).
As I will further motivate below, next monday (20/6/2011) in the first part of the afternoon, that is from 13.45-14.45, I want to have a serious conversation of about 5-10
minutes to get an update of the state of your projects, for all projects listed in:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/student-contribution-s
preferably with all members of the group(s), and to be clear group by group, in the order
as listed. And unless Gerrit decides otherwise, the results from this conversation will
be decisive for grading. But read a more detailed explanation below.
Unfortunately many groups are not yet ready with their NM2 projects,
and for CA3 the time may be too limited to complete all the projects before that
day. However, for the CA3 course I am happy to judge based on proposals as
presented in the sites.google.com/site/create10ca3/student-contribution-s
and your portfolios, as well as your essays of course.
For NM2, I am willing to take your promises and, being in an optimistic mood,
have good faith in your willingness to keep those promises.
Of course, also here, your essays and proposals must be ready in time.
Below you will see the comments Tom sent me. I have also received comments of Jan-Willem, and I sent the kinect group a mail to contact Jan-Willem.
For those working on a nano-project, what Tom writes is important, in particular
because all projects are expected to give a presentation of their work for the faculty (EWI)
community, to communicate their work. So your contribution is of great importance!
=== the text is in dutch, so for the non-dutch speaking ask the help of others! ==
Mijn collega heet Sander Smits. S.M.Smits (at) utwente.nl.
Bij onze opendag in september willen we graag als leerstoel het werk van deze 5 groepen laten zien. Ik hoop dus dat dit gaat lukken, anders is er veel werk verloren gegaan en dat zou jammer zijn!!
=============== end of Tom's message =========================
For the (little prince) group, do not worry about the negative comments,
because based on the essays of both Sabrina and Isa, as well as the comments in the
peer reviews, I have good confidence in your perspective and hopeful about the results,
even if it might need a lot of self-confidence to get these accepted.
Hopefully, the issues about grading for NM2 and CA3 have been clarified by this
email, and I propose to deal with any remaining questions coming monday.
To be clear, the morning session will be spent on writing a manifesto,
which will be presented at the end of the afternoon session, after the serious conversations!
- 16/5/2011: email -- absence(s)
and I forgot to mention, in case you were absent please
indicate that, preferably with reason in
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/notification-of-absence-s
- 16/5/2011: email -- peer review(s)
today was the last lecture of NM2: interactive visualization,
and although the work on the projects may continue until the end of june,
I would like to ask you to submit the peer reviews now, since this
gives an overall view of how everybody is doing. You may limit yourself
to the people you work with, that is who are in the same group, and since no one
has an essay by now, of course, you do not have to make remarks on the
(non-existent) essay.
You can find the review form, with some general instructions, via:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/peer-review-s
Today, a number of students gave feedback on the course, which you
may read at: www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/eval-nm2-10.html
If you have not yet given feedback, you are invited to do so using the form at:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/feedback-nm2.html
Please feel free to comment at the course as you like.
BTW the peer review is obligatory, feedback is not but is nevertheless appreciated.
- 12/5/2011: email -- status
I made a brief round along the portfolios and blogs,
see your status in: www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/participant-nm2.html
With the exception of Albert and Vesso, all portfolios seems to be totally
outdated, and most blogs as well!
Also there are still a number of black Ps, meaning the absence of a website
for your group project.
Keep in mind that grading will be based on your group projects as well
as your individual portfolios, that is the representation of your basic exercises
(ie the unity moodboard) and the project (your contribution and role) in your portfolio.
Coming monday, as I said before, we have the presentation of the projects to the shareholders. This is an important event, and I want every student to be present.
In the afternoon, form 14.00-15.00 (in smart xp) we will have an evaluation of the
course (with group discussion) as well as a discussion on how to plan the completion
and delivery of the projects. You are all invited to participate in this session.
See you monday, and (please) be in time.
- 10/5/2011: email -- 10/38 update your links!
first of all, the moodboard viewings were very nice,
and obtained a compliment from Angelika, so 19/38: well done!
For the other 19/38 (-6 which have a X), please update the
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/moodboard-election-s
page with your contribution.
However, more important is to eliminate the 10 black P's,
standing for students that are part of a (promising) project, but not yet
have a website online, as reported in
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/hall-of-f-sh-ame
Next monday, may 16, 10.45 CT300 we have project presentation(s),
which although announced as final presentations must be seen as intermediate
reports on the work for the shareholders.
I invited both Tom and Jan-Willem to be present, and, based on the original
concept presentations I expect them to leave the meeting in a happy mood, optimistic
about the forthcoming results. Let's not disappoint them.
Finally, kudos, hedons and collectons for bringing .CREATE to the twentebiennale,
including your work. And, if necessary, please give her a hand.
Very likely I will be there the 18th to look at how we are represented and for
the (recommended) art and technology talk.
For all of you this may be a good opportunity to get inspiration for possible
submissions for the gogbot festival in september, that we will start to work on
from may 23.
To be clear, I attach great value to good work for interactive visualization.
So in this period you may/must continue the work on the project(s) for Tom and
Jan-Willem.
that's all, see you monday
- 8/5/2011: .create/nm2 -- 2/38 moodspace(s) + 0 = 2 +3 = 5/38
it is 21.41: 5/38, slowly, but definitly ...
enjoy your late nite coding(s), and before you go to sleep,
don't forget to put it online:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/moodboard-election-s
see you tomorrow
- 8/5/2011: email -- 2/38/moodspace(s) + 0 = 2
It is 16.11
More than two hours have passed, and there are still 2 entries.
From now I will be offline.
But as it seems to become tradition within your group to meet deadlines
at the latest possible time, I trust there will be 30+ entries tomorrow morning.
The presentations start at 10.45, CT300.
Be in time!
see you tomorrow
- 07/05/2011: email -- 2/38/moodspace(s)
in sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/moodboard-election-s
so far 2 entries.
Of course, you still have time.
Don't waste it!
- 06/05/2011: from facebook: capital(s) C
(AE) ... renamed the group to "creative technology".
Thijs de Haan: hoezo dan?
10 hours ago Like
Albert van der Meer: I prefer Creative Technology
9 hours ago Like 3 people
(AE): there suddenly was a Capital C where I didn't meant it to be, for me its either CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY or -- creative technology -- and not -- Creative Technology -- and certainly not -- Creative technology -- [!]
8 hours ago Like
Thijs de Haan What's wrong with two capitals
3 hours ago Like
(AE): Nothing as such. However, it has been all the time without capitals, until the FB rendering engine changed it. So I changed it back to the original state. What is wrong with that? And, anyway, I did definitely not like the single capital C! Personally, I don't like the use of capitals for singular words, as is evident from most of my material, but of course I would not enforce that for everybody!
Anyway, added afterwards, compare: www.google.nl/search?q=creative+technology
and judge!
- 05/05/2011: email -- update(s)
I have updated the participants page:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/participant-nm2.html
A black P means: create a website and put it at:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/student-contribution-s
A red X means: you're out, unless you get associated with a group and explain
your absence and the reason why you are not part of a group yet.
After one week all red X's will be removed.
Finally, next monday we have the (individual) moodboard/space elections,
as also announced in FB, put them (in time) in:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/moodboard-election-s
Monday you have one minute to present your moodboard. Voting we be as with
the worst pages. I look forward to it.
See you monday, and be in time!
- 01/05/2011: after queensday
hopefully everybody enjoyed queensday,
nevertheless, on queensday, I realized I performed an act of oppression,
when E. reacted to I.'s post on FB, starting with the first half
of -- tukkers -- in reverse, I had to take it off,
due to inappropriate language,
unless it had been formulated in english (our formal language of
communication in create), with as the meaning -- stop --,
then I.'s reaction in english could have been -- go to sleep, nerd! --
which would allow (you all) properly to: wake up, as I urged you to do in FB,
as can be read below.
Anyway, if anything bothers and/or pleases you, write it in your blog, seriously!
- 29/04/2011: by email: wake up!
answering a question of Inez, I wrote in facebook:
I have provided an answer in Q&A. You may find the overall guideline for the presentation(s) in:www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/format-present.html / As a reminder, please put a reference to your concepts in thesites.google.com/site/create10nm2/student-contribution-s / And looking there, my general advice to most of you is: wake up!
can I be more clear?
- 20/04/2011:
as some of you have already noticed, Mike Hergaarden
has put his presentation on facebook, including the source.
Now the question may be, can we use this for our mood spaces and
presentations. And the answer is: yes, you certainly can.
It would be a nice step away, away from powerpoint and could lead to a
new, fresh (creative technology) style, where every presentation is a little
adventure.
If you don't like, or have no access to, facebook, then you can find Mike's material
at sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/resource-s
In addition, for those interested, the code is in readable form available at
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/media/select-lib-unity.html
so that you can see how much is already provided for you.
One final comment, especially when the weather is becoming so nice,
have a look at the deadlines:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/deadline-s
I do not want to enforce these in an unreasonable way, but we got to keep moving,
so to speak.
Anyway, have a nice sunny easter weekend, and I will see you:
02/05/2011: student presentation(s), CT300, starting 10.45.
Be in time!
- 15/04/2011: 27/39 +1 registration(s)
as you can see in www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/statistic-nm2-10.html
only 27/39 + 1 student(s) registered their project.
And to Christopher: please identify yourself!
Correspondingly, according to the rules of the game:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/@s5-rule.html
I updated the: sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/hall-of-f-sh-ame
Now this deadline is nothing to worry about, but I urge you to get started as soon as
possible, that is register your project, start working, and update/include a url.
For those, like Tobias who feel their group is not complete, or Zhipeng who is
looking for a group, I advice to post your question also at:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/question-s-answer-s
I have also posted a question there, namely: (Æ): is the 2nd of may a holiday?
Next monday, april 18, we will have Mike Hergaarden as a guest speaker, about unity,
and in the afternoon, for those interested, somewhat more advanced topics of unity
will be dealt with, with very likely an experiment in co-creation in unity (the editor).
If for one reason or another you cannot get started working at the project,
contact me. Perhaps the problem can be solved ...
PS monday 18: be in time!
- 11/03/2011: student contribution(s)
I am happy to see that many of you, present at the afternoon session,
and have after our experiment in collaboration
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/collaboration-s
already an entry at: sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/student-contribution-s
Those not present are first of all kindly requested to make to provide a (after the fact)
notification in sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/notification-of-absence-s
but more importantly to get involved with on of the groups or create a group of there
own and attract other students to join them.
I also updated the deadlines, see sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/deadline-s
and I expect every student participating in the course to be associated with a group
by the end of the week.
In sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/assignment-s
you will find the latest updates wrt the assignments, as well as the presentations
of this morning, for both the semiconductor/nano and telemedicine applications.
I sincerely hope that all projects get on track as soon as possible, and do not hesitate
to contact me if you have any questions.
Next week monday, april 18, we have Mike Hergaarden as a guest, one of my students
in Amsterdam, but also a professional unity developer.
He indicated that he would like to see your (first) experiments with unity, that is
the moodspaces. So, if you did some experiments, make them available in:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/moodboard-election-s
Finally, for those I have missed previous emails, these are archived in:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/moodboard-election-s
look for comment(s).
Did I miss something? Let me know!
- 5/4/2011: storyboard(s) & assigments
as for the assignments, in
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/assignment-s
you will find an update for the semiconductors/nano assignment, in English.
as some already noticed via FB, most of the storyboards constructed are now online,
see www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/cycle-storyboard-nm2.html
Some of you did not hand in your storyboard, among who Ernst, but you may still
hand it in next monday, the 11th.
I also made the storyboards available via the participants page of NM2:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/participant-nm2.html
and it would be nice to see the storyboards in your portfolios and possibly your blogs.
I updated the hall of shame
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/hall-of-f-sh-ame
an for those (among who Stefan, nice storyboard btw) for who things are
unclear or confusing, please ask questions in class or at the common(s)
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/question-s-answer-s
or did I miss something?
Next monday, april 11, an explanation will be given about the projects,
with presence of the shareholders, see
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2/home
Now, I cannot resist to repeat, are there any questions?
If so, contact me!
- 21/3/2011: student(s)
to my surprise I had to give the first lecture interactive visualization today.
In www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/participant-nm2.html
you find the list of students known by me that might/should follow the course.
Please send any updates to me by email, that is:
-- students not listed here -- and ask these to register:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/create/register-nm2.html <www.cs.vu.nl/%7Eeliens/create/register-nm2.html>
-- changed urls of blogs or portfolio
-- errors or typos
next week monday, 28 march, the second year students will give an introduction
to unity, show some of their work and invite you to join their experiment(s).
All of you listed have received the invitation to join the commons,
so feel free to provide information, and ask questions at
sites.google.com/site/create10nm2
