Our research aims at studying aspects of the deployment and architecture of virtual environments as an interface to (intelligent) multimedia information systems. Currently, our focus is on the use of game technology for immersive serious applications, such as climate change and security in public space. We have developed the XIMPEL platform (ximpel.net), supporting interactive video and games, to prototype scenario-based narratives and games.
For information on current developments for XIMPEL, see sites.google.com/site/ximpelinteractivevideo
project interactive multimedia 2009/10: Alex Rietveld
inhoud: Heel interessant.
contents: I believe the contents of the course were quite in accordance with what the course promised to teach us.
multimedia authoring 2009/10: Wiard Vaassen
intelligent multimedia technology 2010/11: Andrei Bistriceanu
relevance: It was a good course, especially for those following the Multimedia track. I took the course for the fun of it ...
support: Well, as any modern course in which it's hard to gather info on brand new tech, the research part was in our hands. Hence, this did not depend on the teachers. I see this as a feature as we had the freedom to explore.
remarks: All in all, I liked the course and the style in which it was conducted. The approach was quite modern and so was the content. I would give it a high grade, if needed.
visual design 2010/11: Andrea Patiyo Orrego
relevance:
The course is highly relevant, because of the importance of impact that a site, a presentation, a report or any kind of project has. Visual Design applies not only to projects related to graphical stuff, but also any kind of projects where balance, clarity, and communication of ideas take part.
supervision:
The course is presented by professionals who responsibly and organized guide and follow the students performance. The student is attended patiently but also corrected if necessary.
The guest lectures were essential during the development of the course.

topic: Dynamic Graphics in Serious Games
relevance:
Serious games are a hot topic in contemporary computer science. By combining learning with playing, both activities augment each other. Dynamic graphics can be used to create bigger and more differentiated game worlds, increasing believability and thereby augmenting the learning experience.
supervision:
During my entire master programme in Computer Science at the VU, including my internship at Mijn naam is Haas, the supervision by professor Anton Eliëns has been excellent.
Our many talks, discussions and brainstorms have helped me enormously in completing my specialization in Multimedia. Comments and remarks were always relevant, to the point, creative and professional.
The personal guidance and mentoring I received has made me a better computer scientist and a more all-round person.
remarks: My master project has been a great finale to an equally great master programme in computer science, during which I got the chance to learn many skills, collect invaluable experience and work together with and under supervision of great people on innovative projects and technologies.

topic: Intelligent Tutoring in Educational Games
relevance:
To make serious games even more serious, we can use several IT techniques such as user profiling and content selection algorithms to implement an intelligent tutoring system. During my internship at Mijn naam is Haas I have used the skills and knowledge acquired throughout my computer science study to add more educational value to the Mijn naam is Haas serious game.
supervision:
Anton has always been able to challenge me academically, give thorough valuable feedback on my work and motivate me as a scientist. I think these are the most important aspects of being a supervisor.
remarks: Anton Eliëns has really been a great support and motivator during both my bachelor and master study. By challenging students with creative inspirational challenges, Anton knows how to stimulate passionate students into creating their own projects, exploring new technology and offering them a lot of freedom in their academic career to develop themselves as creative scientists.
