Final class report Visual Design 2007

Andrew Aird:

Collage missing.

Generally, you could have been a bit more daring, digging a bit more your idea/the assignment to achieve some more original result. Nevertheless, you were accurate and your work contains a certain conventionality that serves it. You web site is a good example of this.

Thijs Louisse:

Your work is not online anymore…(!)

Anyway, I think you did well this year. More focused, creative enough, and sticking to your own style; which is good, although a bit tricky in the sense that seen your skills, you can go further! So don’t rest on them, use them to explore unknown areas as well. You may always go back to your favorites… Great collage.

Ricardo Corradin:

You had an interesting approach to assignments. You did produce some nice results that often had some “abstractness” in it; some soberness as well, that kept things open for the viewer, which is good I think. Visually, you could have worked things out a bit more. Remember the impact “style” or form can have. It’s also an important part of the design. For instance, your sit should have more style, be more worked out visually.

Great essay. Good participation in class.

Peter Hoglund:

Nice works, accurate with a certain attention given to the style. Some ideas might be worth to be dug a bit more out, or at least, to become a bit more personal. Collage is for instance a good start for something more interesting. The harmony was reached but the mainly/only based on colors and subject… now, what do YOU say about this subject. Where is your interpretation of the idea/concept? That is the direction I’d advise you to work on.

However, generally seen, you produce good results for the course.

Generally, you were involved in your work and pretty motivated. That’s good. You produced a lot for the first assignments, and some results were quite fine. Maybe your will of doing well was generating a bit too much elements that might prevent a clear focus/style/message. Don’t doubt too much. Follow your intuition, but don’t forget to question it of course. Make a bit more clear statements. Collage was a bit disappointing; you could have tried to be a bit more daring, less conventional. And the what about the final assignment…?

Jorge Lopez Figuerola:

You are motivated enough but you shouldn’t stick too much to the first idea that comes into your mind. It’s important to work out things and try different techniques/ways to show what you think. Your logo was good. The sign was too busy, missing focus. Try to find a balance between form and idea. Form can also help to shape the idea sometimes, and vice versa…

Your storyboard had some interesting points. Good thinking about framing!

Tom Bestebreurtje:

You were very active in class. That’s good. You have a good critic sense, which is also a good point in design; just be aware that it doesn’t prevent you to explore some new areas, that you might miss if too sure of what you want/do.

Generally you produced interesting results and had some good ideas. I liked you logo for it’s visually strong and kept however some openness. Sign was a good experiment, that

Would ask for more research. You’re on a good way... but keep on working. Thaty will pay.

Creativity: 7.5 Works: 8

Kas Clark:

You worked well and enough! Some good ideas and nice results. Pity I missed your presentation/essay. It’s interesting and pretty complete for the course level. Go on this way, with a bit more freedom maybe. Don’t worry about the form too much, it can be of a good influence.

The collage was an example of this. Your ideas are interesting enough to allow yourself to be a bit wilder in the form.

Creativity: 7 Works: 8

Rob Schuddeboom:

You have your very own style. That’s good. It’s sometimes a bit too abstract, but that also brings some interesting inputs to your results. The collage was pretty literal; watch it… For the rest, you have quite improved since last year. Good. Go on! The final assignment became something great.

Bauke Karel:

You were quite active in class and that was good. Your works were interesting, you had a good approach to the assignments. Your also have a sharp analyzing skills; Logo was good. Sign  could have been a bit ore original. Generally, you have some skills, which served you well for the course; However, don’t forget to work on, explore more, dig on… it can only be of a good influence on your results. I’m curious about the final assignment…

Creativity: 7 Works: 7.5

Mattias Pihlquist:

You have some passion for great and complex drawings. You have produced some nice works in which this passion is quite visible. You have your own style, that’s good. However, for some assignments, you might want to question the need for details or complexity… Form can serve the idea (see sign, which became very specific without losing of its message) but also a bit overruling (see logo, in which the brand might fade behind the overload of details and graphical elements.) Your collage was good, very well in balance and intringuing. I guess the final assignment will become an animation…?

Zoltan Toth:

You works were simple but sharp. That’s a good point. The collage was maybe a bit too “postcard” like, although it of course can be of a good use on some official site. Your second storyboard is better. Your portfolio  first page looks fine, but the navigation could be better. I’m curious about the final assignment.

Creativity: 8 Works: 7.5

Peter Szekeli:

You made some good works, based on some clear statements. You seemed to know where you were going. FINE. The storyboard is not yet very clear; how do you see the development of the final assignment then…? Your collage was quite interesting, it’s a good way of expressing a idea about a subject. The creative side could nevertheless be a bit developed. You can try to dig a bit more before getting to the form.

Creativity: 6.5 Works: 7

Tomas Bigorda:

Your works were a bit too literal, all a bit focused on what you “like”… On the one hand, it brought some harmony in your style (which is good!) but on the other hand, it might lack a bit of originality, of intriguing aspect. I would suggest you spend more time in the conceptual process, trying to develop the idea further before starting to give it a form.

Lukasz Riemer:

Although your participation to the class was rather discreet (pity) your works are of a good quality. Not too literal and with a clear harmony subject wise. I liked your collage that mixed visual forms about the same subject and furthermore referring to the fabrication process, thus time-related. You seem to have some good visual skills and were also able to make some proper results, such as your website, that looks quite professional. An advise would be to sometimes free yourself of the conventions in the form, not necessarily for the final results, but ion order to learn from a different/wilder way of visual expression. But generally very correct. The front page of your site could have been a bit more worked out… Give it some style…

Creativity: 7 Works: 8.5

Dakai Liu:

Some good ideas and a certain will for professional aspect. That’s good. An interesting approach for the sign. Generally your results were fine; I might regret that your participation in class was quite discreet. Your collage is interesting although the technique itself is quite known. You could try to give it a bit more personal aspect. That’s valid for the final assignment... which nevertheless looks quite pro! Good.
