travelling in and around china,
it is time for some serious reflection(s) on the status of (the master specialisation in computer science) multimedia @ VU.
Given the fact that it has often, much to my annoyance, been
criticized as a (admittedly authentic) one man's business, I think it is time
to finalize the specialization, despite the fact that
it has attracted many talented students, as can be seen, together
with my complaints about my organizational status in
2010 year report.
In discussions with the leader of my working group we decided
that a course on serious games might be worthwhile, and consequently
I have written a proposal for a course serious games in a social context.
This proposal was well received and later discussed with other people
and a first version of the course will be given in september 2012,
together with Jacobijn Sandberg from UvA.
Since the intention of the UvA is to start a one year master game development, combining computer science and social science, the course serious gaming (as it has more conveniently be called) will very likely be one
of the central elements of the new master, that promises to
offer a curriculum with high intellectual allure.
So let's be serious! The master multimedia @ VU will be finalized,
allowing current students to finish. Both the courses
intelligent multimedia technology and
visual design are cancelled.
However, students are allowed to do individual project(s) multimedia & game development instead,
or courses at other universities, such as suggested for the the
period during my sabbatical.
Individual projects for bachelor students will, for a variety of reasons,
no longer be possible!
In summary, I look forward to see creative students with an interest
in multimedia & game development at the new course
serious gaming,
after which they are encouraged to deepen their skills
with further individual projects, and possibly other courses of the new master game development
at UvA (under construction)!
